About the event
Presentation: In exchange for bringing souls to the Catholic Church, Pope Alexander VI granted the conquerors of Mesoamerica gold, land, and the labor of those who lived on the land. The presentation focuses on efforts made by the Spanish conquerors and colonists to make Antequera (Oaxaca) a Catholic City. We will investigate the Conquest, Conversion, Churches, and the Baroque period. All these elements are represented in the mural by Arturo Garcia Bustos, located in Oaxaca's Palacio de Gobierno. Participants will gain knowledge that helps them to recognize that Antequera's past is visible in Oaxaca's present.
A visit to the mural on February 14 at 10:00 am is planned. This is subject to permission being granted by staff of the government building, or being denied because there is a protest on the day of our planned visit.

Presenter: As a stay-at-home in Canada Pandemic project, Broadbent wrote a Wikipedia page about the huge mural in the Palacio de Gobierno, "Oaxaca en la Historia y en el Mito." His presentations in the OLL, since 2023, have been about interpreting the history of Oaxaca revealed in the mural.
