About the event

Indigo is a beloved dye throughout the world with both a rich and dark history. Here in Oaxaca, we are lucky to live close to the town of Santiago Niltepec, Oaxaca, where local and traditional production of Indigo dye still takes place. The presentation will focus on the beautiful and labor-intensive process of making Indigo dye, its history here in Oaxaca, and the challenges producers currently face in keeping their traditions alive.

Justino and Abigail will also offer an overnight trip to Niltepec to be with Justino’s family when they are harvesting the crop and producing the dye. Niltepec is in el Istmo. Details will be presented at the presentation.

Speaker Bios:

Justino Medina Lopez is a local añilero from Niltepec. He and his family have worked to produce indigo traditionally for generations.

Abigail Rothberg is an indigo enthusiast and natural dyer. Originally from New York City, she now lives in the Tlacolula Valley where she grows her own indigo plants.
