About the event

Synopsis:

The first 15 years of the 21st century saw left-identified parties and movements elected in fourteen of Latin American 21 countries. While many of these subsequently lost power, since 2018, the left has bounced back in seven: Colombia, Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.  UNTIL mid-November, when a rightwing candidate won election in Argentina, 80 percent of Latin America’s economic output was in the hands of progressive governments. This talk lS BASED ON A RECENT ISSUE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONGRESS ON LATIN AMERICA (NACLA) AND looks at the challenges facing this second round of left-identified governments with a particular focus on indigenous, women’s and environmental rights, the War on Drugs, and THE new generation of leaders.

Speaker Bio:

Linda Farthing is a writer and educator with 30 years experience in Latin America as a journalist, independent scholar, study abroad director, and film field producer. She has written four books on Bolivia, and reported for The Guardian, The Economist, Al Jazeera, Latino USA and NACLA.
